What do you think about women who use chewing tobacco?

  • It's still pretty popular where I live but it has never been very common among females which is kind of weird. Why is dipping a "guy thing"? I am a woman who occasionally dips and I get shit for it. I also belong to a few chew company websites to get coupons and to enter their contests and they send emails with the subject like "Hi (woman's name), check out what other guys like you have built lately". I get most of their customers are guys but why address everyone as a male when some aren't and they could say something more neutral?

    • Ah OK. Where abouts do you live, if you don't mind me asking?

I expect it's a traditional thing - in the same way pipe smoking is 'a guy thing'. You must be in such a small minority as a female tobacco chewer that the people marketing chewing tobacco don't even realise you exist, so tailor all their promotional content towards men.

Why not actually contact some of these websites and let them know? Ask them why their emails are all gender specific when you're a woman who loves chewing tobacco? They might change their language to be a little more gender neutral - could benefit them as well as make women like you feel more included.

      • Southern US.

I don't want to be "that girl" that makes a big deal. I am offended but I can also see 98% of their customers are probably men so I don't want to be an ass. I just wish they were neutral from the get-go.
