  • You also have to remember that electric cars need to get their electricity from somewhere else. Where would most electric car owners get their electricity? Those coal power plants that megadriver mentioned. It's also far more to energy efficient to use a combustion engine over an electric one, due to the energy loss when charging the battery.

    • Steam engines were also really efficient and went faster than gas cars of the time. If you imagine the last 100 years they spent fine-tuning combustion engines were also used to improve steam engine design, We'd have some pretty neat steam powered cars.

Honestly I always say the answer to auto pollution would be to shut down all the car factories and just keep repairing the cars that already exist. If you work on a new car today you see how really disposable they're designed to be. Driving around in an old boat lincoln with a carburetor pollutes way less than an automotive factory, you gotta think paint runoff into the water supply too. I remember some figure from a while back said buying and driving a prius pollutes way more than just continuing to drive an old car for another 10 years.

      • steam is alive and well its just produced and consumed on humungous scales that most people dont see

theres no better way to transmit gigawatt scales of thermal (and therefore rotational kinetic) energy short to medium distances

        • Always wondered why diesel was used for trains instead of steam. Always figured it was a gas industry scam.

          • diesel is safer cheaper easier to operate way less maintenance and more fuel efficient

only advantage (in railroad anyway) that steam has is cool factor and back in the day waaaay more power but modern diesel electrics with ac frequency drive trounce any amount of tractive force a steam rig can make

although its perfect for railroad diesel is ony efficient up to a certain scale and then theres lots of logistical issues where steam & gas turbine power are more feasible

believe me this kinda shit is my bread & butter no scams just good progress

            • I dont know enough about it to argue, the diesel passenger trains around where I am run the engines at full RPM all the time, even when theyre sitting still. I take the train all the time, sometimes its a diesel.

They dont seem too efficient, but I also have no clue about fuel efficiency of different trains so I cant really say anything about it.

              • the engine drives a generator and they run at a constant rpm but as the driver calls for power the load on the engine increases

youll hear the engine get louder and the turbo spool up

and thats when they swill the fuel compared to usin fuckall at idle
