I don't care about it much. I don't see it as necessary or life milestone really. If I met someone that I loved and wanted to spend my life with I would marry them though. Two reasons. One, because of the legal reasons listed above, and two, odds are it could be important to the other person. (Or his family at least, most older mothers are super into their kid's wedding.. including my mom I guess. Okay three reasons.)
