I've never heard the term "low-talker" before but I know exactly what you mean. It's embarrassing to keep asking someone to repeat themself so you start going by body language and just give whatever reaction you think they want. Bursting out laughing when someone was telling me about how their dad had died has made me think the embarrassment of repetition is probably the safest bet.
