This is great advice. I don't know why people are so down on gift cards as presents. I love to receive gift cards for my favourite shops. It's still thoughtful because you have to think about which shop the person would like to go to. If I want new clothes, for example, I would much rather be given a gift card to go and choose things myself and try them on, than be given some clothes that may or may not be to my liking, and that may or may not fit me well.
In buying me a gift card for a shop which I really like, you have bought me an afternoon of "me time" where I get to choose some nice things for myself. It's an experience.
