  • IQ tests before buying guns would not solve gun violence problems for two reasons (probably more that I can't think of right now).

    1) Plenty of psychopaths can pass an IQ test.

    2) Even if they couldn't pass an IQ test, they could buy one on the black market from someone who can.

Maybe a psychopathy test could solve problem 1 (MAYBE), but not problem 2.

    • A full psychological evaluation would definitely be much more sensible than an IQ test. However in this case it was actually the mother of the perpetrator who had the gun license, who might very well be of sound mind.

      • Agreed, people can get hold of guns without a license easily from friends, family or on the black market. A full psychological evaluation would be way too expensive to ever be implemented anyway, sadly, so more people would either turn to the black market or whoever has to conduct those evaluations would cut corners.

        • You're probably right. We're lucky in the UK that restrictions on gun ownership have been around for over 1 hundred years and those restrictions have gradually tightened. We never really had widespread gun ownership which means it's much easier to control. There just isn't the same gun culture here.

          • Culture can be changed though. Here in the UK we changed attitude to seat-belts here in the 70s and 80s, and attitude to war veterans in the 90s. We're changing attitudes to smoking now. We did that with the hard work of charities and government awareness campaigns. It can happen, culture can be changed. Changing gun culture in the US might not be so easy, but it's far from not possible.

It might be harder for gun control, but it wouldn't be impossible. If gun control laws were introduced gently and gradually in America, that would be a lot better than marching in and outright banning all guns. Do it gradually and people will adapt, because adapting will be easier than breaking the law.

    • The man who was the shooter actually was an autistic genius. He graduated high school something like three years early.
      Also, what disthing said.

    • Also, people have too much access nowadays to how to create their own weapons. I read a comment on another site and the guy said he saw a video where a guy made a gun from a 3D printer.
