I've never understood why people ask this question like this. It's like asking, "Do you like movies? Do you like music?"
It's just a medium and like any other there's a shit load of variety, much better and worse than the stereotypical picture that comes to mind. It's not all spikey-haired kids with superpowers, like at all. Haha.
Just like movies, it can be anything. There are even really down-to-Earth and depressing anime about things like children starving to death during war times that I've seen jerk tears more than any movie. There's one anime that on the surface _does_ appear to be childish with a giant, friendly cat-like creature and a little girl, but it's actually about (based on a true story) the girl's mental image of an older man who frequently played with her and helped her escape her depression before being sent to prison for life for raping her, when in reality her serial rapist was free and the man (seen as the cat) who was imprisoned was the only one she trusted. Not for kids.
Also, some of the greatest sci-fi stories of all time used the anime format to escape the limitations of live-action flicks.
There are some incredible gems and there is also absolute trash.
I am and 90% is a rather forgiving estimate if you ask me.
My Neighbor Totoro
The studio doesn't expressly admit that it's based on the rape and murder but the film is utterly saturated to the brim with Easter eggs and references to it and it's long been widely accepted in the fan base that this is the case. I didn't know about this upon my initial viewing and it ultimately still ended up being a rather depressing movie either way, albeit less disturbing.
Your search story got a laugh out of me. I suspect I just may be able to imagine the sort of thing you encountered. The keywords I left behind were rather unfortunate.
What are your thoughts on anime?

If you're into sci-fi, you're probably aware of Sturgeon's Law: "Ninety percent of everything is crap."
That story about the giant cat sounds like it could be very powerful. Any hints about the name? I haven't got anywhere with Googling.
Any search which includes the words "animé", "girl" and "cat" returns results that are very predictable, and not quite what I'm looking for.

You mean like porn results, I agree.
