As a confirmed Agnostic, your position resonates with my inner self. And, I think that hedonism is a very strong argument. Marquis de Sade loved to drink, fuck, and express his inner perversions. The thing is that over time, hedonists have less offspring than darwinists, who engage in hedonism to a lesser degree.
But, you make a good point. If engineering life for Mars, jupiters moons, cloud tops of Venus, etc, produced a survival advantage, people would get turned on by the idea (you know get wet, get hard, get subliminated and shit). People would say, my bugs are sexier than your bugs. They would have test tube wars for weekend entertainment. Now that I think of it, "Test Tube Wars" would be a good magazine to publish.

All of those things could also just be for pleasure. Maybe we are all just hedonistic, not darwinistic, or maybe we are both.

There are actually people that get turned on over robots. Many a geek gets hard or wet over the stuff you mentioned.
It leads me to insanity and depression and alcohol if I think about this stuff too much. 😉
