Speed limits (For me those are rough guidelines), the stupid arrows in supermarkets in corona times, wearing my mask over my nose. I know, I know... I look like a POS who doesn't care about the world and is responsible for so many deaths, but let me ask you this...
So... you need proper gear, eye protection and a mask with an active filter (good ones cost about 100 bucks) to paint a car, or work with asbestos, you need full military gear and a gas mask to work with bio weapons. But for the "Worst and deadliest virus in human history" all we need is a surgical mask, or a scarf and lots of disinfectants (That cost between 10 and 30 bucks)?! Screw that!
You have a point. But (as someone with a little expertise in this), the mask does help *significantly*. Of course, as you pointed out, it seems flimsy and dumb. It's obviously impractical to ask everyone to wear a biohazard mask, etc. But the mask is much, much better than nothing.
What are legal and illegal rules you don't take seriously?

I have too, and we always used a wet process to strip and wax the old asbestos VCT floors.
My understanding is that asbestos (as well as lead paint) is really only dangerous if it's disturbed.
