The South Bronx has been a shit hole for a very long time. In the 60's 70' and 80's it was actually far worse than it is now. In the late 70's when NYC was on the verge of bankruptcy, it seemed like there were more buildings in the south Bronx burning than standing, because their only value was in torching them. It literally looked like a city that had been bombed in WWII.
As terrible as it is now, compared to the old days, it is a paradise. Here are some photos. A few of them are from other parts of the city, but you will get the idea.
