What’s a cashier supposed to do if they think they see fake money?

I work as a cashier at a gas station, so I’m wondering, let’s say I think or I have a feeling that a bill might be fake or they’re trying to use Counterfeit money to pay me?? What steps do i take? Do I call the police? Or do I tell the customer “Use a credit card, this bills not real?” Or do I tell customer they can’t shop here anymore???

Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • Ask your boss? I'm sure they have a procedure in place.

  • Quickly pull the Smith and Wesson 500 from under the counter, point it in the customer’s face and growl “Ask yourself this? Do I feel lucky? Well do ya punk?”

      Shoot first, ask questions later.

Most of the time your boss won't be there but when he is, let him handle it. But if YOU have to handle it -

When you do come across a fake bill, just hand it back and politely say, "I cannot accept this, someone has given you a fake bill."
Now they knew it was fake before they tried to give it to you, they may have printed it. But if you say "someone gave you a counterfeit" then it makes it sound like you are not blaming them.

At that point people usually take their fake bill back and say something about getting it at the bank. No need to call the cops or whatever because by the time they get there, the customer will be long gone. Plus who knows, someone else really may have paid him with a fake bill and he didn't know.
