Well-known, but not exactly popular. Have a medium-sized group of friends, about 10 people, none of whom like to talk to people we don't know very often. We pride ourselves on having our own individuality and enjoy the fact that we only fit in well with each other. It's like having our own secret club. I love my friends.
I digress; I'm not popular, but everyone knows my name and face even if I've never heard of them, seen them or spoken to them. I'm too shy to be popular. I stand out because I'm quiet and weird, but don't have popularity for the same reason. I always disagree strongly with popular people who try to bring me into their circles; I keep away from popular people because whenever I see popular people I see destroyed personality and no individuality. I wouldn't want to be popular.
To the OP: I'd advise against using IIN as a part of a sample for any sort of research; we are not very representative of the world at large :)
Most popular people who I know who are popular have got there because they move with the crowd, doing things they don't like and not being themselves to fit in with those around them.
From my observations at least, popularity doesn't CAUSE that behaviour, popularity is the EFFECT of that behaviour.
Were you popular in school?

Destroyed personality and no individuality? How so?
I genuinely don't see how having a large group of friends and being well known causes either of those things. Do you even know these people?
