Weird thing with my eye and a mirror

If I press my forehead up against a mirror and get my eye real close to the surface, and then concentrate on the little white dot of light, I can see a circular, black and white image of...well, weird stuff. Like cells and floaty things, and occasionally my eyelashes. It's like looking under a microscope. It's slightly uncomfortable but if you shift around and focus you can get a pretty big and clear picture. I used to do this for long stretches of time as a kid. Does anyone else do this and does anyone understand the physics behind what the hell's going on there. If you have no idea what I'm talking about try it! I've googled this and asked people and no one ever knows what the hell I'm talking about.

Is It Normal?
Help us keep this site organized and clean. Thanks!

  • this is normal.

I didn't get the part about you looking real close to the surface:/

    But yes it's normal.
Sometimes when I look at the sky, I see small transparent cell like shapes, if I move my eys up or down it's like I'm chasing after them.

Then again you may be talking about this: when I stare at anything with deep focus without blinking, this thing starts to look different than normal.

    So it's normal

  • yes! i know exactly what you are talking about. i used to do that all the time when i was little. i had a bracelet with shiny beads and whenever i was bored in school i would look into it and would always pretend i was looking into a microscope. i think it's normal and i've always wanted to understand the optical science behind it.

  • I see that too, probably related to /something/ in eye physiology.
