Wear shoes in the house?

Is it normal to wear shoes in the house? Not like muddy work boots but just in general

I'm European, so no. Shoes belong near the front door, neatly placed, or tucked away in a shoe cabinet.

Slippers are fine. I don't want stuff from the dirty street on my nice rugs.

      Very sensible.

Once I started travelling around outside of Europe I realised that some people never even think to take their shoes off when they enter a home.

It really irritates me when I see American people on TV wearing shoes inside - especially if they then put their feet up on soft furnishings like a sofa or a bed, or a nice rug... why???

I appreciate that American people on TV are not the same as real Americans, so I'm hoping that someone comes along in a minute to tell me that Americans in real life don't actually do this...

    • This is what I've heard. I actually never thought about it until someone from Europe mentioned it. I just thought a handful of eccentrics around here asked for shoes to be taken off. Lol

I wear shoes in my house. I also wear hats in my house and when I eat cereal I pour the milk first. I noticed when I invited someone over and did one or more of these three things out of habit, it caused some people to have major meltdowns. Not a single one could give a real reason as to why these things were wrong. XD

It depends a lot on the culture and where you were raised.

I do notice that people who work in professions where their shoes tend to get dirty (and carry dirt) tend to take them off inside their houses... and people who primarily work in offices or other clean areas may not.

My wife tends to wear slippers in the house and rarely goes barefoot.

I go barefoot unless I need to put shoes or sandals on. I may wear my shoes in the house if I'm going to be going in and out several times.

I grew up usually wearing shoes in the house once I put them on.

I'm American, and I've always taken off my shoes when I get home.

It's normal if ur white from wut I seen.
maybe because white people usually have hardware floors, and others have carpets so they don't want it to get dirty? just a guess

        Suggested poll choices.

        1. Always wear outside shoes in my house.
        2. Sometimes wear outside shoes inside.
        3. Never. Take them off at the door. Wear slippers, socks, or moccasins instead.
        4. Barefooting indoors is my style.

I take off my shoes, but growing up, wearing shoes in the house was pretty normal. We live in a dry climate so that might have something to do with it.

Unless I'm away from home home I'm pretty much always barefoot. My husband is just the opposite. It seems he almost never takes off his shoes. Our kids are mixed on shoes.
