  • In late 2016, early 2017, Pepsi had purchased ad space on YouTube for an advertisement that immediately drew backlash. In said ad, Kendall Jenner used Pepsi to stop a dispute between the Police and Civil Rights Activists; by giving the Pepsi to the police.

The backlash from this ad was so large that Pepsi removed all ads from YouTube, claiming that the ads were being played on videos they found unsuitable to their brand. Other brands quickly followed Pepsi, telling YouTube that they would only come back to the platform if the content became more family friendly.

During 2016 and 2017 (As well as much of 2018.) the advertisements were so limited that it forced even the largest of content creators to seek other ways to make money. YouTube has only recently begun allowing swearing in videos again.
