You shouldn't choose not to be with someone because people don't approve. It's what YOU want that matters, and your friends and family should accept your decision regardless of whether or not they like it. However if he is lacking qualities that you're looking for in a suitable partner that's a different story. Don't hold out for the perfect guy, everybody has flaws, just look for someone who makes you happy.
