Unpopular opinion : i dont understand why people tip waiters

I dont really get why there is a trend of tipping the waiter
they are fucking paid for that it is their job why the fuck should I tip for the services they offer for which they are paid for

I dont tip but when I'm out with friends and I refuse there is often a awkward situation because they cant "understand" why I refused
Its so annoying at times and then at some places these mfs straight away ask for a tip like what the fuck go ask your employer bitch

I don't live in America but if I did then I would 100% agree, why should you? Why should you be looked down upon for refusing to pay them to do their job while it's accepted for their actual employers not to pay them. I get that that's how they make their living but that's not your fault, and by tipping them you're just ensuring that this unfair system continues.

If you're American, then I find it hard to believe you don't know what the situation is.

Is it unfair and ridiculous? Of course.

Is it the servers faults? No. Is it the employers faults? Yes.

Who are you choosing to punish? The victims.

    Wow. Aren't you a winner.

    • Exactly.

I used to not understand why waiters should be tipped, but now that I know, I accept that tipping is a necessary evil in the stupid American restaurant system.

I never eat in restaurants, unless somebody pushes me to go, though. The whole experience is unappealing, imo.

        It's incredibly wrong.

Yeah, I can understand that. I'm not big on going out to eat here (It's expensive and I just don't care that much) but I go out to eat a lot in the US (boyfriend's choice) and have friends who work as servers. I'd rather they just get paid a decent wage. The "logic" behind needing a tipping system is fucked.

That is very true. You're not.

But you are choosing to eat out. You don't have to eat out. How about you only eat out at restaurants where you know the staff are being paid their full wage?

Still not our fault. They choose to work there. They can always be a janitor or delivery driver. I agree with the op.

Sure they can. If there is a position available. If they meet the specifications for any job available.

That still doesn't take away from the customer choosing to patronise a business that mistreats their workers. Why is it ok for this specific work to be treated like that? Why don't all jobs get the same system? Why don't you and I have to rely on tips so that our employers can get away with paying us less than minimum wage? Because of our education? Ok...Well what about janitors, delivery drivers, cashiers, other "no skill" jobs?

You really puzzle me, sometimes. You can be so hardline and seemingly uncompassionate for someone so intelligent, sensible and usually reasonable and level headed.

I've been a waitress. It's not the greatest job in the world, but you always make minimum wage. If you want better wages, you get a second job or get a higher paying job. I've done both.

And speaking as a former waitress, I don't believe in tipping unless the person has done something above and beyond their normal paid duties to deserve it.

    I only tip waiters/waitresses I like.

  • US restaurants pay their waiters peanuts so theyre forced to get tips to earn a proper wage. In pretty much every other country waiters earn a proper (minimum) wage and tips are purely at the customers discretion for excellent service.

People tip waiters, at least here in the United States, Because a lot of waiters make a wage that is less than half of minimum wage (I made less than $3 an hour working at Waffle House, American minimum wage, at least in this state is $7.25). I do not agree with this practice, and I commend those countries who do not have tipping and actually pay their employees a fair wage. I am an American, and I tip waiters because I feel bad that they're not getting a fair wage. I wish someone would pass a law here that required all restaurants to at least give their employees minimum wage. This damn wage exploitation by these big companies really grinds my gears and should be completely outlawed! It's just a way for the big restaurant companies to be able to severely reduce pay for their waitresses and waiters. I don't agree with this system, But I would tip your waiters and waitresses, Because they're being unfairly treated by these big corporations and these stupid laws That only give them like 3 bucks per hour for hard work. Here in America, I always tip my waiter or waitress because I know that they're working hard for incredibly little pay just so these big companies can get richer.

All restaurants in the US are legally required to pay minimum wage out of pocket if the tips don't reach minimum wage by the end of the pay period.

Nobody makes less than minimum whether they are tipped or not. They just want more than minimum
      wage.

      https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tipped_wage

"If wages and tips do not equal the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour during any week, the employer is required to increase cash wages to compensate.[5] As of May 2017, the average hourly wage – including tips – for a restaurant employee in the United States that received tip income was $11.82.[6]"

Waiters and waitresses get paid low wages. If it weren't for tips, they'd have a hard time making a living. If people didn't tip, employers would be forced to pay higher wages. Thus, food prices would go up. If you can't afford to tip, then don't. I feel that generous people that tip, keep prices down for everyone.

    • But that is not the way it should work.
Employers should be forced to give them min wage and they should not depend upon customers

If employers were forced to pay minimum wage, then the coffee and donut we now pay $3.00 for now, would probably go up to $6.00. Could you imagine how much the cost of a newspaper would go up if your paperboy got paid $12.00 an hour?

My understanding is that in the usa wait staff are paid very low rates because they can earn tips. In Australia I don't tip unless it's small change at the register going into a general tips jar or someone has been especially helpful, but it's never a large amount.

I'm more inclined to tip on Sundays or Public Holidays if I believe staff aren't being paid penalty rates for working on those days.

I never tip unless I feel they really deserve it - and even then, I don't tip the customary 15% automatically. I tip the amount I feel they've earned.

If they were lazy or rude, I become a dick and leave them a nickel instead of just nothing. That way it's very clear that I'm dissatisfied with my service.

waiters truly only get paid two dollars and something. tips are supposed to make up their minimum wage, and yes waiters are guaranteed to get minimum wage. 7.25 where i live. but obviously that is not a very high wage, and the company wants to pay the least amount as possible and i would not put it past a company to fire someone for not making minimum wage a certain amount of weeks. they may say something like the person is unliked by customers etc. also waiters do a lot. they have a lot of customers to wait on. they have to clean tables, pick up food, and bring food to customers all with a smile. also, some customers are rude. i have nothing against you. it is your money, but that is why people generally tip.

I have a friend thats my age, in her 40's, who is still a waitress. She works in not the most fancy restaurant, but nice and makes a very comfortable living. She is college educated but continues to do this because she loves the work and the people, she is fantastic as a waitress. She is single and does what she wants. She says she makes just as much, if not more, than what she would have as a teacher. Im sure if she got paid the normal minimum wage and did not benefit from tips, shw would be a teacher right now.

You tip the clean pert waiter, .15%
    BUT
The guy that leaves work dirty, tired, smelly.
    You tip .0
    Who cooked your food?
Who cleaned the plate you eat on?
    Who made your salad?
Big deal, the person brought a plate to your table.
    Ooooo impressive.
    You tip your cocktail waitress.
    BUT who cleaned the glass?
    WHO actually mixed the drink?
    You tip you're doorman.
    BUT, who cleaned your room?
    Who ironed the sheets?
My point is, tipping is a lopsided bit of crap.
    Before you reply in anger.
Do you willingly share your tip SC with the people ' under ' you?
If not then shut the fuck up.
Cause you aren't tipping you're leeching.

            It's more aimed at 309.
            A 15% tip.
For a pretty boy with a manicure to bring you a plate of food.
Most of my experience was in the trenches.
Dishwasher, sanitation, food prep, salad prep, sou chef.
            Knowbody tipped us.
We bust ass to get a clean well prepared meal of your choice on a plate as quickly as possible.
Sanitary dishes, clean salads, spotless glasses and silverware, napkins rolled, wash clothes heated.
            Table set.
You take all that shit for granted.

I know it's customary to tip in the US, but in Europe most people tip when they are satisfied with the service. I do tip when I'm happy with the restaurant. But if the food is not good and my waiter was a grumpy ass, I don't tip.

I actually enjoy tipping for good service, cause it motivates the staff to be good and earn more money. For great service, I can leave a good 10-15 Euro tip. A lot for most of Europe.
