It's like how some people think cilantro tates like soap and how asparagus makes some people's pee smell funny, it's genetic. Not all people have the ability to taste savory flavors. It still exists despite your ability to perceive it.
I just Googled it when it was referenced in the MSG question on here, and I'm a bit confused, myself. It says savory, but lists it different as salty. I've always associated savory with salty, but after reading responses here, perhaps it has a richer flavor?
It's a taste. Cant describe a taste to someone who cant taste. Savory is one of those tastes that no one had a good word for and just attributed it to whatever food was available.
