Tub full of shit in my apartment building's basement

Perfectly normal. Every place I’ve ever lived in had a tub of shit in the basement.

How do you know? Did you trace all the pipes back? I doubt it. The simplest answer is usually the right answer. Cheap landlord, leaky pipe is much more probable than a shit collector.

Way back in 2003 I rented a shitty house, the drain pipe from the shower got disconnected somehow and it was draining right onto the ground like 6 inches under the house and bugs were crawling up the pipe so my tub would have several insects in it every morning. They didn't fix it, they just basically taped a straw between the pipes so no more bugs but my shower took a week to drain all the way.

You must live at a pretty shitty place, no pun intended... Probably just leaky pipes. Doubt anyone would collect shit.

Years ago, my uncle had a huge, 3-story apartment building in the same parking lot (more or less) as a shopping center, and a huge tub was in the basement, left by the former owner. He was rarely down there, but we were, as my father and I did repairs on the building.

We'd sometimes keep materials in the basement, and always found that tub full of shit, bottles, and smelling like piss. Uncle didn't know and didn't care. It was either or both the residents shitting in it, or, transients/homeless breaking in through a crappy wood door that led to the basement from outside, shitting in it and boozing it up. We knew it wasn't plumbing, b/c we changed all of it when he bought the building. It was people just seeing it as a shit tub. Also part of my uncle's bad judgement in renting to damn near anyone.
