True story: the 4 friends

The 4 of us met 11 years ago during our freshman year at a university close to our home in Europe. All of us were tight during our university years and we are still tight today. All 4 of us have the same education (Master degree in Software Engineering), with minor specialization differences. All of us are between 30-32 years old at the moment.

Nr1: was born with a bad liver. He lost his best years (mid 20’s) fighting for his life while waiting for a transplantation. He got his transplantation a couple of years ago and is now doing well. He is earning 2nd most in the gang and is currently single because he had to reject a girl during his sickly days and he never found one ever since.

Nr2: is the one who’s earning most in the gang (about twice as much as nr3 who’s earning the least). He has his apartment paid up + a brand new luxury car and hefty savings in the bank. He is however currently suffering from a broken heart after losing his girlfriend of 2 years to another guy.

Nr3: the only foreign guy in the gang. He is climbing the slowest in terms of career, but still has a stable economy. He recently got married to a bride he met a few weeks prior to the wedding (arranged marriage, weird but normal in his culture) and is currently working on the essentials to get his wife over here before starting a family.

Nr4: oh boy did this guy have a wild ride. He was the one we all thought would climb the ranks fastest, until one day he was sent for a 2 month business trip to China that he never returned from. He sent in his resignation, dumped his local girlfriend of 9 years that he was engaged to, married a Chinese and got a kid with her. He also holds his own in terms of income as he is working in Hong Kong, but he is working very long hours compared to the rest of us.

Summary:
While I know that this post only scratched the surface of our lives, it still summarized the overall situation pretty well (and I guess that’s what we will have to go on, without scrutinizing too deeply). It’s just a philosophical moment about who of these you would want to be if you had to choose one.

Since I’m not disclosing which one I am in order to not skew the votes, all I will say is: I’m reasonably satisfied with life, but I’m certainly not the happiest in the gang. There are some things that I wish were different.

Nr1 has the best life 0
Nr2 has the best life 4
Nr3 has the best life 3
Nr4 has the best life 3

    I'm guessing you're number 1

    • Nope, I’m fortunate to not be nr1. That guy really drew the short straw. I really hope something good happens to him in the future to make up for all the bad stuff.

I can reveal myself now as the poll has stabilized. I’m nr2 and I’m surprised that nr4 didn’t get all of the votes as he was the only one who found true love (not counting nr3 as he got arranged). The breakup has been extremely hard on me and I feel incapable of moving on. I may have all the material things I ever wanted, but they are all worthless without the person you love.

I don't think what any of us here in the Is It Normal community think is as important as what those dudes think of their lives.

I'd be open to living number two's life, because I would love to make a lot of money, and I have zero interest in dating these days.

Number 3 right now, but number 2 has laid some good foundations and could be on his way to overtaking number 3.

Some extra info that may be relevant:
Nr2’s breakup was a couple of weeks ago so he’s currently not ready to meet someone new yet.

Nr3 bought his apartment with the help of his parents. They will continue living with him once he gets his wife over.

Nr4 has a very well educated wife, so he has dual income. The downside is that she is quite unattractive

      Nr2 is 30 years old
      Nr1 and Nr3 are 31
      Nr4 is 32

Who TF cares? You've spent around 12 years of your life getting to where you are and probably about 40 to 50 percent of the expected length of your life and you're still worried about the Jones'

If I had to pick one, I'd say number one. The liver situation most likely let him know life is short and to enjoy every moment you are not guaranteed tomorrow and you can't take stuff with you. However if no1 is you then you didn't learn and you're still living in self pity that life gave you a major obstacle.

Not sure about the rest, but you sure as hell aren't the one with the best life, if you are this hung up on each one of these friends and worry that much about who has the good life between the four of you.
