Total honesty: yes or no?

If you could press a button that would magically make everybody in the world only ever tell the truth, would you press it?

(Imagine that once pressed it could not be unpressed - there is only truth, forever!)

I'm perfectly ok with "white" lies. I don't think our society could handle a completely honest world.

It would take care of the politicians and lawyers so it would be worth it in the end. Society would advance for the better due to the fact that crime would go WAAAAAYYYY down. And prosecutions in court cases would almost always be correct and just. I think you all just don't want to tell the truth and that is rather disgusting if a bit understandable. But still the benefits FAR outway the negatives.

I'm not sure that it would change a whole lot... Truth is ultimately in the mind of the person that is perceiving the situation. While there is a "true and correct" sequence of events that transpired in any given situation what is truth was how it was perceived by the people present at the time. Therefore while the accounts of the story will differ (even drastically) from person to person is it for us to say that one is not necessarily telling the "truth"?

It would do away with those that intentionally lie for their own self gain but, I have to question how often that happens.

yes, it might be considered rude/ gross/ unmannered/ hurtful and awkward for a while because a lot of our social norms and culture are structured around being deceiving and not saying what you really think. But i think everyone will eventually get used to it and it'll be a change for the better. For example, when i ask someone if my skirt goes with my shirt, i want a honest answer but i dont really expect one, if someone tells me it looks bad ill have to consider if this person really thinks that it looks bad or does he/she just hate me? If you dont like something about someone, if you say it to their face they will probably think youre rude and that u hate them when you really didnt mean it that way. Lying creates lots of misunderstandings. you might think that lying can avoid problems but in the on the long run, the problems come back even more tangled up than before.

Honestly, "truth" is just something that's always being searched out. People look for the "truth" for eternity, but the "truth" is eternally ephemeral. The quest for "truth" brings it into existence, but it is an object through which its existence proves its non-existence.
