The way I see it is you put so much more effort than someone who will buy let's say a birthday card. Just you making them a cake is a billion times more thoughtful than buying a card that you didn't even read. I'm not a parent but for me personally, you making something with pictures or just a cake beats any kinds of gift money can buy. I like you :) (hope you're not a guy haha)
