I think it involves pretty base and confused ideas: bloody mindedness and revenge substituting for compassion and justice. Newspapers and television sell themselves on this stuff.
The irony is that by seeking and justifying this impulsive violence (i.e. they deserve it) one lowers themselves to the level of the criminal.
I agree wholeheartedly that it's an inappropriate notion to have, but I think it's pretty normal for people as a whole. As in...I don't think the poster is weird or way out of line in his emotions towards these characters. Obviously transferring his sentiments to real life situations and vigilantism would be completely inexcusable and unjustified. However, I think it's totally normal for people to fantasize about their own ideal "revenge" so to speak towards a fictional character, as long as they are fully aware that it is irrational.
