  • I'm going to use myself for an example. When I was going through school, I had the hardest time paying attention. It wasn't because I wasn't disciplined enough (I got spankings for bad grades and I also got a very good Alicia Keys CD taken away from as well) it was because no matter how hard I tried to focus my mind always wondered on its own. It got to the point where, yes, it did distress me in class. I was taken to a doctor, they diagnosed me and in turn, at school, my test were made different than the other kids.

I do not agree with putting kids on medication. In my opinion, medication is the devil. I was put on Adderall and another medication for my ADD, both caused depression and spontaneous mood swings. I do not agree with medication.

There are plenty of people who do not grow out of ADD. I am aware that I am only 21 but, so far, I am one of them.

Just because it's common doesn't rule out it being a disorder. You used nightmares for example. In your case, it was normal. You grew out of it and, for most kids, that's the case. A kid with a disorder would suffer insomnia because of these nightmares and may not grow out of it.

"If someone was hyper and you make them less hyper by putting them in martial arts or in some kind of sport was that ever a disorder?" If that's the case then, no I do not believe it was a disorder because the disorder itself does not work that way. I was in martial arts and I was put in soccer. I had trouble paying attention in both activities and never even learned the game of soccer. I, unlike the other kids, was on the field daydreaming and picking flowers.

No. Child neglect never becomes the child's fault and that is off subject. ADD is not the child's fault but is simply something going on in the brain that gives the kid a harder time to focus than other kids. There's nothing the parents can do about it except figure out a learning strategy that works for the kid. I encourage you to learn more about ADD and other disorders and why some traits are classified as disorders while others are not.
