Alright so do all these issues need to be fixed with drugs? Which they usually are. Also what determines if it interfere with life?
Most kids are unfocused and hyper that is why they need to be taught discipline. If they are taught discipline and held responsible maybe we don't need to drug them and in any case when is it ever good to jump to "Lets drug the child". We should try our hardest not to medicate children and we don't.
Children are not done developing and its already been proven that child lose some of these traits as they grow up and its said they can out grow ADD/ADHD. Children have a nightmare phase but that is actually considered normal and something they grow out of.
If that is normal why isnt hyperactivity considered to be one? I had awful nightmares as a child and my parents asked the doctor. They said "No there is nothing to worry about and children grow out of it." The doctor was correct since I only had nightmares till a certain age. Than they for the most entirely went away.
If someone was hyper and you make them less hyper by putting them in martial arts or in some kind of sport was that ever a disorder? If a child becomes fat since the parents feeds them nothing but mcnuggets does that mean they had a disorder which made them fat or they simply had awful parents. At what point does child neglect qualify as the child's fault?
I'm going to use myself for an example. When I was going through school, I had the hardest time paying attention. It wasn't because I wasn't disciplined enough (I got spankings for bad grades and I also got a very good Alicia Keys CD taken away from as well) it was because no matter how hard I tried to focus my mind always wondered on its own. It got to the point where, yes, it did distress me in class. I was taken to a doctor, they diagnosed me and in turn, at school, my test were made different than the other kids.
I do not agree with putting kids on medication. In my opinion, medication is the devil. I was put on Adderall and another medication for my ADD, both caused depression and spontaneous mood swings. I do not agree with medication.
There are plenty of people who do not grow out of ADD. I am aware that I am only 21 but, so far, I am one of them.
Just because it's common doesn't rule out it being a disorder. You used nightmares for example. In your case, it was normal. You grew out of it and, for most kids, that's the case. A kid with a disorder would suffer insomnia because of these nightmares and may not grow out of it.
"If someone was hyper and you make them less hyper by putting them in martial arts or in some kind of sport was that ever a disorder?" If that's the case then, no I do not believe it was a disorder because the disorder itself does not work that way. I was in martial arts and I was put in soccer. I had trouble paying attention in both activities and never even learned the game of soccer. I, unlike the other kids, was on the field daydreaming and picking flowers.
No. Child neglect never becomes the child's fault and that is off subject. ADD is not the child's fault but is simply something going on in the brain that gives the kid a harder time to focus than other kids. There's nothing the parents can do about it except figure out a learning strategy that works for the kid. I encourage you to learn more about ADD and other disorders and why some traits are classified as disorders while others are not.
Some people are predisposed for certain sports or careers. Is there really an issue with these children or do they just have the possibility of being great? If someone is hyper and you put them in sports they are going to be able to last longer.
However the drug pushers would say "No its bad get rid of it". What about the coaches? I am sure they need that type of energy on the field and clearly not everyone can keep up.
Should we really be blaming people for being odd? or should we not build upon what they were given? Running against a current is very difficult and no matter what the current is always going to be there. Its easier working with than against it wouldn't you think?
Maybe they are simply talented but since they do not fit the perfect mold we reject them. No one fits that mold and none of us every will. We are all unique and we all have areas which we are going to be better in. Every Zebra might look the same but they all have individual patterns. They are not merely clones of each other.
To everyone who does not believe in mental disorders...
