Yep, at least according to the diathesis stress model your genetic make-up causes a susceptibility to certain mental illness. They suggest your genes, in conjunction with stress, can cause disorders to develop or worsen their symptoms. I.e. one person (A) is more likely than another to develop depression for example, so even though A and B have the same amount of stress in their lives, A develops the illness.
