To do all your grocery shopping at the dollar store?

Like 50 grocery items? The person in front of me always seems to buy all their food and everything else at Dollar General.

I used to work at dollar general. Very normal. Even had people buying several hundred bucks worth a shit regularly yo restock there store.

Only one person ever pissed me off, this black crazy looking bitch came in every week bought 100 bucks worth a shit and paid in crumpled up ones, just threw em on the counter.

Not to be racist but I always wanted to lean over the counter and slap her so hard she turned well any color. That bitch pissed me off

I use to work at walgreens and there was this annoying old coupon lady. This was in 2007 before the TV show and I thought she was scamming the store. Looking back I was probably too mean to her but she would get like 400 dollars worth of groceries for like 4 bucks. I told her she can only use one coupon per item but that was bullshit i made it up. I just didnt get the whole coupon thing

By 2007 in the UK, every store except for some of the smallest independent corner shops used bar-code scanners at the checkout for both items and coupons. If a coupon wasn't valid for a sale, the system recognised this, displayed an error message on the till and didn't reduce the price of the item.

Walgreens was a huge corporation even back then, so I assume the company had converted to bar-code technology before you worked there.

You being a bit of a dick to the old lady sounds like either jealousy about her being able to get a good deal, or misplaced loyalty to a company that fundamentally didn't give a shit about you or any of the other tiny cogs in the corporate machine.

I just saw it as I'm being employed to work at a company and I saw this woman as scamming the company i was employed by. I'm not one to take my job TOO serious but if you hire me I at the very least wont stand by and knowingly allow people to scam or steal from the place. We did have barcode scanners but I had never heard of someone getting that much stuff for nearly free. Now that I saw the TV show I realize that she didnt do anything illegal or shady.

Knowledge that they were valid coupons and that you made up the limit yourself was enough information to know that she wasn't doing anything illegal.

It sounds like you looked down on her so you punished her. This is rendered rather transparent by your admission that you were "probably" too mean to her whereas it's incontrovertible that you were. Given that she did nothing wrong all while you introduced false policies, you actually should have been fired but you're somehow not even entirely sure that you did the wrong thing.

Yea ths amount of time needed to be able to do that is just ridiculous. I'll never understand it. Still though it is hella good savings. I rarely even remember I have coupons

Yeah dude she was good at it. It didnt seem right that she was getting buggies full of stuff for dollars. I guess its legal tho so I should have just kept it moving.

I have seen people pull off stuff like that. The catch is that one ends up buying a lot of crap they don't need.

Thats very true but she would still get alot of shit that would come in handy. I always called her "the crazy coupon lady" to my coworkers. She would get everything she needed then extra crap for free even sometimes. I think there was a time the register told me to pay her. I called a manager and he said it was legit. You have no idea how much shit shed get for free like im talking 3 buggies full. The most shed ever pay was about 5 dollars.

Yea pretty much. It is a little fucked though. Talk about envy if you are behind her. Bet you got some salty customers

I saw one pay with $5 worth of pennies. I loudly told her about the coin machines lol. Its just rude to inconvenience everyone cause youre lazy.

My sister, and I once paid for a Barbie doll with eleven dollars in change about forty years ago. Money is money.

I always assume dollar store stuff(food) is subpar somehow. Like all made in China? Idk. Maybe not.

They're either poor, frugal, or a bit of both. Nothing wrong with saving money when you need to.

I buy a lot of groceries at Walmart, because it's really close, but I don't buy produce there.

Good thing you dont. The produce at Walmart and Target is terrible.

The Walmart in Dover, Delaware is smaller than the one in Katy, Texas, and it's extra trashy. 😆

I guess the British equivalent of Dollar General must be Poundland.

Some of the non-food stuff in there is of dubious quality, but the food is recognisable brand names. Sometimes it's either discontinued lines or doesn't have long to go before the packaging's Best Before date, but a lot of it is no different from what you see in a supermarket. I assume the company manages to finagle good prices on huge wholesale buys, and the shops clearly have very low overheads compared to supermarkets.

There's nothing wrong with the food per se, but it's not the place to shop for fresh or frozen food. You can live on highly processed food packed with preservatives and canned food, but a diet consisting solely of that isn't really healthy in the long-term.

Pretty normal. I would check to make sure nothing is open or expired, though.

No matter what shop you go to, the person in front of you always seems to be buying a month's supply of whatever it is they sell

Well if you're poor you're poor. And some people just prefer saving money. It doesn't taste any less than any other food, if you're used to it.

Some of the food at dollar tree or not any cheaper than they are at Walmart. So I’m not sure why people would prefer to buy them at dollar tree.
