Like if you like the guy beyond being a friend, think: what would the next step be? Hint: its not tongue wrestling or dropping your pants.
A next step would be a date, together, like for lunch, a movie, a dance whatever.
If you are turned down for that, you know he's not interested, you weren't inappropriate and there is no embarrassment for either of you.
But look at the embarrassment going from friend all the way to the horizontal mambo: do you really have to wonder? You are not going to have much luck forging romance out of sexualized friendships.
