In order to keep this at bay, you should find something to keep your mouth occupied such as chewing gum, eating light and healthy snacks such as celery which cause you to chew a lot, or chewing tobacco if you already smoke (not recommended if you don't smoke considering it greatly shortens your lifespan in the long run). It's probably not advised to sharing this with people such as your girlfriend as it could lead to a misinterpretation.
