This one's for the men. does thought matter more than the actual gift?
I've always been insecure about gift giving, usually because I dont know what to get. What can you get a guy that you just can't go wrong with?

Get something he likes. If he likes to read, buy him a book. If he plays games, buy him a game, etc... Or go down the emotion path and buy him something that connects the two of you in some way... That's what my girlfriend does anyway.
My girlfriend is a typical girly girl and usually buys me stuff I have no use for. Like a small statue of two dolphins doing a pirouette thing for Valentines day. Or a semi-sparkly heart shaped frame with pictures of us together for my birthday.
And I think it's sweet. I don't like such gifts, but I appreciate the thought behind them. Cause they are gifts from the heart. Lovingly chosen by my girlfriend and they have a special meaning to her.
If she's happy, I'm happy.
The only practical thing she's gotten me is a watch for Christmas.
Even tho I very rarely wear a watch, it's a nice thing to own.
Besides I can't really tell my girlfriend I want a lowering kit for a 1984 E24 BMW as a present now can I? XD
Nothing wrong with getting someone a good whiskey, or something... If your buddy likes a good drink, he'll appreciate the gift.
One of my best friends (also ex), also an experienced drinker like me got me a limited edition Chivas Regal. I invited her over and we drank the thing together. Girlfriend isn't a big whiskey fan, so I made her some bloody maries. I appreciate a good drink, so a quality drink as a present is welcomed.
Aaanndd, here I am- the "not-every-er", here to remind you that "not every".
I don't really like expensive presents, they make me feel guilty and uncomfortable, and my tastes aren't very expensive to begin with. Getting good stuff for cheap is part of the enjoyment.
