Thanks for the flirt.
But really, of course I don't know your problems, but there are some cases of folks going sailing and the separation from stress and civilization seems to cure them of some pretty serious things (or remission).
I've done the Queensland coast and the Northern Territories, so I understand what one might miss out there. We took over 3 months from Carpenteria to Darwin.
With emphysema I'm no longer confident about my physical ability to withstand extremes of temperature which badly affect my lungs, ditto strong winds.
That must've been an amazing trip although if you stayed on the water you did miss out on the amazing desert country. Down the coast of Western Australia would be fantastic too
Flew a small plane across the outback at like 50 feet. Also way up the King River. Twas way back in the mid 70's, though.
I know and understand emphysema well. It has taken me form a 3.5 minute free diver to half a minute or so. That's why I'm fighting so hard to quit tobacco.
Sailing in clean air might be good for you???? Certainly little need for running on a 45 foot boat and at 5 to 6 mph, it's not like you have to do things in a hurry. Try and find someone on the Q-land coast who you can try it with. Never far from a town & hospital up that way now, right? Do you use Oxygen?
You flew the plane yourself? Wow ........ I've been a passenger in both single and double engine planes in the outback, flying low is absolutely amazing, entirely different to whizzing over it in a jet plane. I loved it so much I was going to do the pilot training, but couldn't afford it then or now - it was a nice fantasy while it lasted though.
I'd quit tobacco before I was diagnosed with emphysema and before I had a heart attack, but quit about 30 years too late .... I had a lot of trial runs over the years, stopping for various lengths of time but then starting again, usually via a joint or a lover who smoked.
What have you tried? I assume hypnotherapy/nicotine replacement in all its forms/cold turkey/CBT? I can't even be around other people's cigarette smoke now, it affects my lungs for at least 24 hours, I don't get how anyone with emphysema can still be able to smoke, to be honest.
I'll give some thought to your suggestions ... and no, I'm not on oxygen ...... yet ..... I'm told that's third stage and I'm only in first stage, fourth stage being the last one. Are you on oxygen yourself?
I am an unlicensed pilot, so I get to drive when we're up, up and away.
I haven't been diagnosed but it seems logical. Believe me, I'd like nothing better to never smoke again, but it has an incredible hold on me. Some days I have none, others 3, rarely more. I've gone months without, then bam, gotta have one and as they sell the fucking things singly here, it's just too easy to get ahold of them.
Tried EVERYTHING and spent huge dollars to quit, but nothing has lasted more than 2 years. I think the only reason it's not really cripling is because I've spent the majority of my life far beyond the pollution of man.
No, no oxy yet, but I'm considering it; I'd like to see if it helps in times of need, like sex.
Some more info I thought you might find helpful: there's a website called Patient.co.uk which has forums on all sorts of health issues, including emphysema. I only thought to look today, although I've been contributing to the Cannot tolerate statins forum for quite a while now and have found it great both for receiving and passing on information.
Why not have a lung function test and get a diagnosis? You probably already know that emphysema isn't curable but I know from personal experience that it is MANAGEABLE, both with medication and changes in breathing methods which greatly improve energy levels - could be good for your sex life?
I'm on two puffer medications, not Ventolin which only works for emphysema caused by asthma. The most recently prescribed is a cortisone powder which has made a huge difference to my life. Amazingly, I've had no side effects from either of them (the other one is Tiotropium in case you want to research it) and then at New Year I accidentally discovered the perfect drug combination for me: the new cortisone spray, a small amount of Johnny Walker Black Label and a thumbnail size piece of an illegal cookie! I found myself dancing after not being able to for nearly two years - a great way to start 2015. Of course I can't use this combination daily but nice to know it's there for me when I need it - maybe even for sex if I get lucky.
By the way, eating cannabis (obviously not smoking it) does open up the bronchial tubes and make breathing easier.
It doesn't sound as if you're smoking seriously if that's all you're having, but of course none at all would be even better. Like you, I've mainly lived out of cities and also worked hard physically and eaten healthy food for most of my life, otherwise I reckon the emphysema would be more advanced than it is. However, I accept it will advance slowly and inexorably and that if something else doesn't get me first it won't be a pleasant death. Oh if I had my time over again .......
Thanks for the info. I don't feel the doctors here are of much help so when I need one I'll probably have to get to a bit better medicine.
I think I'm all right for now. I even ran for a bus today, loaded w/groceries and it was OK.
This is god, I KNOW ALL
