Think that mental disease should be avoided if possible in newborns?
Maybe it's because I come from a very medically-forward family of doctors, but all my life I've felt that were I to someday get pregnant and discover that my unborn child had a mental disability, I would immediately abort it. I also feel that people who raise children who are mentally retarded are being burdens on society - what will happen to that child when they are unable to care for it? It will live on the government's dime and suck up money that could be going to people who are poor or trying to care for children, or who are legitimately physically disabled.
My opinion does not extend to people who suffer from things like ADD, OCD or Bipolar, and I'm not sure why. I only feel this way towards people with diseases like Downs that heavily impair their ability to do things like hold down a normal job or contribute meaningfully to society. I'm also NOT one of those people that thinks homosexuality is a mental disease - some of my best friends are gay. I'm only talking about very serious, very impairing lifelong disorders that prevent victims from doing much of use to the world.
And I'm sure there are a few examples of patients of this sort going on to do things like compete in the Olympics or write novels or whatever, but on the whole most of them do not end up doing such things - most of them end up bagging your groceries, and that's if they're -really- competent.
Is it wrong of me to find it cruel that a parent would be so desperate as to bring a child into the world under conditions like this, knowing the harsh and inhuman fate that kid would have someday?
