They sound kinda silly to me, though it is normal to be afraid of being raped,and people do get raped... But there are so many ways to be safe. Always go with another girl and stick together. Just don't go out late with a straight guy friend, they are the biggest statistical risk.
I prefer the company of lesbians anyway, but even then you still have to be careful of the older obsessive cougar types.
If you are walking down an empty sidewalk stick to the street side, or if the street is empty you can walk on the road.
Biggest point though, is the buddy system. Always keep a girl friend by your side if you are walking around. Look out for each other. If she ends up wandering off with someone and you can't get a hold of her just call for a taxi home.
