I disagree that it's not more widespread than it was before the 1960s, it's definitely gotten more widespread. And yes, it's taken more meanings. People never said motherfucker or "fuck you" in the 1950s, but the word would sometimes be used as sex then when saying things like "I fucked that woman" or "Do you want to fuck?", but it was only by certain classes of people. Yes, maybe the word might have existed for 300 or even 500 years, but there's a difference between a word existing and being commonplace.
