I think in your example lol might have meant "lots of love". That's what my mam thought it meant:P. I agree, though. It's annoying. And in those cases it's usually the most mundane crap. Wow, you're in a Supermarket? That is *so* lol-worthy! Pfft.
Sounds like a good alternative. The issue would still exist though. Lots of love should be written differently like: "lolv"
"Lots of love" would certainly be a great alternative translation!
