  • There were not problems developing, though. In general, things were on the up and up. The economy was improving; the tax rebellions had succeeded in their goals; everything in America was getting better. There were a few issues that people had, at times, but those issues were few, and they were generally being dealt with.

    • Then there would have been no reason for the States to call a Constitutional Convention.

The fact that they did call one... indicates that there were problems in existence and ones they saw developing. QED

      • As I said, there were a few problems, but there were not that many. I believe part of the reason they called the convention was to come up with a compromise regarding tariffs, with one side wanting to amend the Articles to allow the imposition a 5% tariff on all imports, while the other side rejected that number as too high, so they got everyone together to make a compromise, as well as to fix a couple of other issues.

The tossing of the Articles in favor of writing a new Constitution was not what the delegates agreed would happen in the convention, which shows that the problems with the Articles could be fixed via simple amendment, otherwise people would have agreed to toss it beforehand, without having to do under the table, to the absolute dismay of a fifth of the delegates, and to the disliking of several others.

        • And yet, the States ratified the new Constitution in less than a year of it being presented, and eventually all 13 States ratified it.

Here is a more balanced short summary of the key issues and the debates. There are more detailed articles that discuss a number of other issues that had become apparent with the Articles of Confederation and were debated as well.
