By curling up into yourself and not sharing how you feel, you're not allowing this guy to build up any kind of emotional bond.
You should tell him about your chronic anxiety/depression. At least this may allow him to understand a little more about why you behave the way you do.
If it helps, drink alcohol to lower your inhibitions somewhat. Your true feelings will come out when you're anebriated anyway.
I understand that this may potentially be difficult due to your mental health problems, but try to stop thinking "what if" and just do whatever feels natural at the time.
