  • If you are nerdy you might know there are already millions of Linux based phones on the market. They call them Android Phones.

    • It's not just Android anymore - but chances are most of the smartphone users in the world wouldn't know about them (e.g. Tizen) and likely only care about iOS and Samsung's flavor of Android.

Also regarding to your comment about Android is a "Linux-based" system - there's a debate about that as the only major component in Android that can be attributed to Linux is the kernel (from what I heard is that a "distribution" must also include the standard set of utilities - something like that).

    • Lol, it is, but its so modified that Android apps are incompatible with the more "standard", i.e, ubunbtu based linux os. Of course, a clever hacker or app developer can make them compatible with both.

      • Plus, aren't Android applications running off of Java using the Dalvik (or ART for 5.0+ devices) runtimes? Then again someone could probably port either of these runtimes for a standard desktop Linux distro (not that I've heard or seen anyone try - BUT there's a experimental x86 build for Android). *shrugs*

    • Ahhhh, I dont believe so last time I checked though I may be wrong I don't believe android is open source like Linux. Or perhaps better said the limitations service providers superimpose on phones like preventing thethering and even adding a "tether-taddle" if you so by pass the firmware restriction.

To me true open source is Linux and last ai checked it's illegal to profit off the sale of the operating system. Android is the best and I believe I shouldn't have to result to hacking my phone in order to root it, it should already be rooted

      • The Linux kernel is open source and so it is available for anyone to modify. The Android operating system uses the Linux kernel and modified it to fit their specific needs (as is the case with many Linux based operating systems). Because it is open source it is a common system to build off of. Programmers are not required to make their modifications open source. The fact that Android is a Linux based system is fairly common knowledge you can Google it.
