Well, he knew what he was doing, he was pretty intelligent. He had some crazy views, but he definitely knew what he was doing as far as the inbreeding.
He was sentenced to death, so the court found him sane.
I don't know if the father/daughter couple got arrested or not. Incest isn't illegal everywhere (between adults), and even in places where it IS illegal it's not really prosecuted if it's between consenting adults. They were from Ohio I believe, not sure how Ohio treats incest.
