  • Again, it's totally fine if that's your opinion. I'm not trying to convince anyone or belittle their views, so I hope it doesn't seem like I'm trying to do that.

It's just that to me, a lot of these arguments sound like the justifications people make for keeping gay marriage illegal (or interracial marriage, just 45 years ago). In fact, let's just replace the word "incest" with "homosexuality" and imagine this conversation took place fifty years ago. It's pretty easy to imagine someone actually saying this, even today:

"If two adults are consenting, it still doesn't make me feel that homosexuality is right. To me, it's selfish. It would ostracize them from the rest of the family if their relationship was ever found out. It would emotionally scar their family, friends, and possibly themselves. But they obviously didn't care enough about them if they decided to go into a relationship."

I'm sure there are plenty of parents throughout history who were absolutely dismayed when their son or daughter came out to them, or revealed that they were dating someone from a different race/religion. But I don't sympathize with the parents. I sympathize with the children who are faced with a terrible choice: face a lifetime of denying who they are, or a lifetime of ostracism. To me, that is their (awful) problem, their decision, and their responsibility.

I understand that an incestuous relationship could easily be problematic. But as I said, bottom line: I have a problem with the idea that society should protect people from their own decisions.

    • But what about people like drug addicts? They aren't just doing something immoral, they're doing something that physically, emotionally, and mentally harms themselves, and they don't stop. What about alcoholics? Should we just them waste their life away and continue to hurt themselves and possibly their family?
