I think the fact that your friend is angry at you for treating him so badly is an even greater indication that he cares what you think about him.
You're going to treat your friend like crap for the rest of your life until he leaves you, and when he does you're going to try and tell yourself that you didn't need him anyway. One day, when all these people who care about you leave you - you will know just exactly how bad you've been.
