I'm actually going back to PS1 games, imo that's one of the best features of PS3 that it plays and saves PS1 games, I dont really have an interest in these new game systems, it seems like they keep getting worse, or maybe im just one of those "stuck in the past" retro gamers but i don't really like all these serious games, not that I mind violence, it just seems like they don't have much story anymore... It's like in the old days since the graphics where shit they had to make up for it with good story/characters, now they can get by with having awesome graphics and mindless violence
I don't agree with you about the stories. I'd say many of the latest generation of games (from the last 5 or so years) have been really focused on story and characterisation. It seems to be all about making the games as cinematic as possible now, sometimes to the detriment of the gaming experience, other times elevating the game to a new level of artistic expression.
The money that can be made in the industry now means you can attract great voice actors, invest in sublime graphics and downloadable content, and make playing a game not simply about getting to the last boss level, but about delving into an expansive fictional universe with a rich history, multifaceted characters and layers of non-linear story.
See: GTA, Far Cry, Bioshock, Deus Ex, LA Noire, Fallout, Red Dead Redemption, Assassin's Creed, Portal, F.E.A.R, Skyrim, Halo.
Honestly, can't you remember a time when virtually the only games with decent stories were Japanese RPGs? The balance has definitely adjusted in the right direction, imo. Perhaps you're playing the wrong games :P
I can agree with you in a way. While I keep up with current games, side scrolling games are almost none existent as well as shoot em ups. Games that ARE considered shooters are the rinse and repeated FPS types that consist of holding L1 and R1 or LB and RB together to aim and shoot instead of the insane bullet dodging of older games. Don't give up hope though! If you want side scrolling, Muramasa the Demon Blade, Dust: An Elysian Tail, Bastion and Mighty Switch Force 1 & 2 are great. Mushihimesama Futari, Ikaruga and Sine Mora for bullet hells. Sorry if you knew these already, just thought I'd point out some good mostly recently games.
As for this story, I'm interested in the PS4 but I'm also looking at some Wii U games as well. I won't count Nintendo out of this one.
The consumer's console, PS4!
