UK already tried to negotiate better terms, with this referendum as kind of a threat to back it up. But guess what? They didn't get very good terms, and sure enough people voted to leave.
And anyway, it will look really bad for the politicians if they simply ignore the leave vote. The only somewhat graceful way to get out of it that I can see would be to have a second referendum "Really leave the EU, for sure?" and have it go the other way... which is possible since apparently a significant fraction of people voted to leave without thinking there was any chance they would win. But it's hard to know how many would actually change their minds.
