  • Yes, your views are racist - and, for future reference, proclaiming "I don't hate black people" does nothing to negate that. Especially when prefaced with "generally speaking".

Like Avant-Garde said, it's most likely an ingrained belief; one borne of ignorance. Ergo, your views are probably common or "normal" of people who are just as ignorant as you are, but that does not mean they are correct.

I'd suggest listening to your wife.

    • It isn't quite ignorance in this case so much as experience. OP full well knows and understands why they're wrong. Some things OP has experienced has shaped this logic in order to deal with those experiences. OP simply needs different experiences to reshape his perspective.

      • I disagree. To be ignorant is to be "lacking in knowledge or awareness" and/or "uneducated", so I'd still say it applies. The OP is evidently not aware of the outside world enough to understand his views are wrong - or why they are. Hence the question "But why do I think this way." The OP has acknowledged the double standard, but has then gone on to excuse himself by saying "But I think this is normal for a man of my background to think", which is a far cry from accepting that he is in the wrong.

Also, where does the OP state that they've experienced anything that could cause their prejudiced views? Unless that was just a presumption on your part?

I'd argue that the OP doesn't need different experiences, per se, but needs to educate himself and adjust his outlook.
