You answered your own question in the question :) people are harsh online because they know there will be no repurcusions and because they can't act like that in real life. It's nothing to do with people online being afraid to say it to your face, why would they? If everyone acted like they did online the world would be an even shittier place than it is right now. Be thankful that people don't act like they do online to your face :)
