Now for some pop psychology. A lot of what makes people feel good about themselves is seeing measured accomplishment, which can come from many different sources. The same phenomena that makes grinding MMO's popular is what promotes this muscle mass craze that some people have.
Evolution has nothing to do with it. There is no 'more evolved' until well after the fact when we can see which traits were selected for.
