Have you heard that BBC Radio 4 game 'One Song to the Tune of Another' on the programme 'I'm Sorry I Haven't A Clue'? It's a scream:

I mostly just sing parodies that I make up in my head to the tune of different songs rather than actually swapping lyrics like what you're describing. I do, however, think I'm rather good as I can go on ad nauseam until my relatives are infuriated whereupon I just have to laugh. Honestly, sometimes I just can't stop myself.

I do this all the time. Try singing the words to "America the Beautiful" to the music of "Auld Lang Syne". Another one that works (at least in verse) is Led Zeppelin's "Dazed and Confused" sung to the music of "Jackie Blue" by the Ozark Mountain Daredevils.

A lot of people sing the song "Amazing Grace" to the tune of "Gilligan's Island."
