That i become enraged by the phrase "calm down"

I'm not exactly sure why but for some odd reason the phrase calm down brings about the most unimaginable rage whenever It's directed at me. It's like a fire lit off inside, and it burns with rage, my body gets really hot, my vision sort of goes into a tunnel like vision and a slight red tint(thought I think that is in my head), I feel my hair stand, I can feel my blood moving, my heart beats rapidly, and I just want to beat the person into a coma for telling me to calm down. My thoughts when being told to calm down usually sound like this: "Calm down....CALM DOWN!!!! " I don't understand why, other phrases like relax, chill out, or other methods for calming someone don't bother me. Even when someone is joking and I'm in the middle of laughing or smiling, It's like a mini bomb goes off in my head and It's like, "Wait what did you just say?" Is that normal? Is anyone else like that or is it just me?

Is It Normal?

  • At the start of your story it sort of sounded like you were having a really wild orgasm, untill you got to beat a person into a coma part. Anyways, I feel the same way, not only is this phrase overrated, but IT DOESN'T FUCKING WORK.

  • Yeah, this is normal. It especially pisses me off when I am calm. Then I get angry.

  • It gets me angry too. It feels really patronising. If I am angry about something then it means that I care about something, and telling me what I can and can't care about is something that I really hate.

  • "Unimaginable rage" about two simple words is probably why people tell you to calm down. I'm not going to annoy you by saying it, but seriously.

    • Again a person who seems to lack the comprehensive skill to understand the question correctly.

  • It's probably annoying because it comes across like they are trivializing what you are upset about.

  • When people tell me to calm down it makes me feel stupid for some reason. I'm usually not even that upset and when someone tells me that I feel like I'm being ordered and I MUST follow it...which is why I never calm down. I also feel like I'm being dismissed - and I hate that feeling. Usually if I rant or talk excitedly its for a good cause so when someone tells me to calm down in my head I hear it as a 'Shut the fuck up and sit the fuck down.' - That may seem over dramatic but thats how I feel Lool.

    • Not really, I punched someone once for telling me to calm down.

  • Or how about "take a deep breath"? - that's even worse for me. Don't tell me how to breathe! I think all of these phrases have the opposite effect to their meaning. I reckon it's conditioning. We're likely to hear them when someone's not calm. Then each time someone says it, memories of previous upsets are brought back. So all the anger and frustration gets compounded in a way.
