Its human nature to be afraid to die. This is why we have religions in the first place, to help man cope with mortality. You are supposed to focus on Heaven to help you deal with death.
I on the other hand don't believe in a God or a Heaven, I used too though. I went through the same thing, its a really deep and scary feeling but I got through it and now except my fate as real, I don't care what happens to me after I die because there is nothing I can do about it. I just hope hope HOPE that I don't get re-born again on this earth. This place SUCKS and I definitely don't want to come back.
One thing though, accepting my death and life really put things into perspective. I don't care about things as much as I used too because it really doesn't matter. In the end, people die and life goes on, and what ever you cared about or mattered will do what it will do without you.
