Bipolar disorder is characterized by the swinging between extremes it causes. People experience periods of depression and mania which can last for days or weeks, and crash in between. In the lesser-known manic extremes, people have illusions of grandeur and often make poor descisions, thinking they could accomplish things they obviously couldn't. (For example, "I know this sounds stupid but I think I could fly if I tried" or "I don't run very often but I'm super pumped to go on this mega-marathon in a couple days")
